The Truth About Teachers' Unions

Public-school teachers are finally free to make their own decisions about union membership.

Here’s what you need to know

For decades, government workers in many states could be fired for refusing to support a labor union financially.
Thankfully, the U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled in Janus v. AFSCME, 585 US (2018), that public employees can no longer be required to pay union dues or fees as a condition of employment.
Supreme Court staff summarized the decision this way:

“The First Amendment is violated when money is taken from nonconsenting employees for a public-sector union; employees must choose to support the union before anything is taken from them. Accordingly, neither an agency fee nor any other form of payment to a public-sector union may be deducted from an employee, nor may any other attempt be made to collect such a payment, unless the employee affirmatively consents to pay.”

Similarly, in 2014, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Harris v. Quinn, 573 US (2014), that “partial-public employees” like state-paid home care aides, child care providers and others were free to choose whether to support a union.

Teacher Union Facts

The National Education Association (NEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) prioritize funding left-wing causes over advocating for teachers and the betterment of the American education system.

In 2024, the NEA spent over 50% of union dues politicking with 97% of those funds going to Democrats and leftist causes.

Only 9% of their 432-million-dollar budget was spent representing teachers.

This Supreme Court and significant numbers of radicalized elected officials have walked away from freedom and justice for all toward an extreme, controlling, discriminatory, exclusionary, misogynistic, homophobic, out-of-touch, cruel, racist, crap, corrupt ideology!

Executive Director NEA

The rush to reopen schools is about politics, not kids—it’s the anti-union crowd trying to break us.

Randi Weingarten

AFT President

If you get in the way of our progress toward a more just nation, we will get in the way of your election.

Becky Pringle

President NEA

These unions use member dues to fund politicians and programs that demand a federal school choice ban, the Green New Deal, Defunding the Police, and Medicare for All which have no bearing on educational issues like teacher compensation, classroom conditions, or student outcomes.
